What is the process?
Our veterinarian will arrive at your home and gently explain the process of humane euthanasia. The first step is to give your pet a sedative to allow for a nice state of relaxation. This will help your pet feel relief from any pain. The vet will assess your pet is adequately relaxed and proceed to administer a series of injections to allow him or her to pass peacefully. The veterinarian will walk along side you every step of the way.
How are the injections administered?
The first sedative is given intramuscularly. This can take about 2-5 minutes to take effect depending on your pets condition. A series of injections are given consecutively via a vein in one of the limbs. This process takes approximately 1-3 minutes.
Will my pet feel anything?
We are used to working with pets that have multiple diseases and organs failing and some pets can be more sensitive than others depending on their muscle mass. We tailor our protocol for each individual pet to make this as smooth as possible. However, due to the nature of these elderly or frail pets, there may be a reaction to the sedation such as nausea.
Will my pet move or vocalize during the procedure?
The medications we use help to make the process as stress free as possible for you and your pet. There are natural changes that occur to the body as your pet passes. Their eyes may not fully close, during the final injection they may take faster deeper breaths, there may be twitches of the face and legs, the tail may move slightly as it relaxes, and urine or feces may release. There is normally no sound or vocalization at all.
What happens after my pet has passed?
After you pet has passed away there may be some relaxation of the bladder and bottom so we place an absorption pad to keep your pet clean.
We will take your pet with us and prepare the aftercare option that you selected. Our veterinarians uphold the strongest sense of love and respect for every patient, so rest assured your pet will be gathered into our loving and caring arms.
Where do you take my pet?
We will facilitate aftercare services with the crematorium on your behalf. Dignity and respect are the core of our company’s principles. Rest assured that every step of the way your pet will be handled in a loving manner.
How long until we get the ashes back?
The aftercare process takes about 7-14 days; your beloved pet's ashes will be mailed to you or you can pick up from the aftercare facility.
